Claire was up at 4am after spending the night tossing and turning and lying awake staring at the ceiling for hours. Three women were considered possible suspects in the death of Wayland Michaels and Allan Portnoy … Wayland’s girlfriend Sara Potter, their former employee Wendy Small, and the business partner Kristin Cunningham.

When Sara had come to talk to Claire, she’d rambled and brought up things that didn’t seem relevant to the case. Wendy acted oddly when Claire and Ian ran into her at the Clancy Building and now she’d canceled her appointment to speak with the detective. Kristin made it plain that she couldn’t stand Wayland and hinted he’d been involved with illegal activities, but something about her made Claire suspicious.

Could she have killed the two men in order to try and take control of the company?

Thoughts and ideas swirled in Claire’s head. Each woman had motivation. Did they also have opportunity? Did they have alibis? Why hadn’t she asked Ian about that? She made a mental note to do that later in the day.

Were they overlooking something, or someone? What about one of Wayland’s associates who was involved with whatever illegal dealing the man was embroiled in? Wayland may have crossed someone he shouldn’t have. How could she find out?

Claire had rolled over and her thoughts had turned to her former husband Teddy Rollins and the life they’d shared. It had been a happy time. Teddy doted on her. Even though the man had been decades older than she was, they made a wonderful couple. They had so much in common. They’d had such lovely times together. Teddy had never been married before Claire, but he admitted that he’d been head over heels for her moments after their first conversation. The man pursued her, but it took a long time for her to succumb to his charms. He was so much older, he was so incredibly wealthy, he moved in social circles she hadn’t known existed. She was afraid to fall for him, afraid it wouldn’t work out, afraid of what people would say about her, afraid he’d fall out of love with her and regret ever marrying her.

But fall for him, she did. And her time with him was like heaven.

Claire always had strong intuition and could pick up on people’s emotions, but when Teddy died unexpectedly, it felt like she’d been thrown into a deep black pit of despair that she’d never be able to climb out of. And slowly, slowly her paranormal powers rose to the surface.

She thought about her mother and how poor they were when she was growing up. At times, her mother worked three jobs to keep a roof over their head and food on the table. When she was young, Claire didn’t even realize they were so poor. They’d had a big garden and her mother taught her to sew her own clothes. They loved to cook and bake together, and both women loved to read. Claire’s mom always impressed upon her daughter the importance of education, and the young girl heeded her mother’s advice.
